Fundación Centro de las Nuevas Tecnologías del Agua – CENTA

CENTA is a water research center originally promoted by the Ministry of Environment of the Junta de Andalucía. With a research career with twenty years of experience in the field of wastewater purification and water management, CENTA has become an undisputed benchmark at the international level. It also serves as a platform for the transfer of technologies and knowledge. The main objectives of its activity are: (1) to promote a better management of water resources, with a more sustainable, participatory and supportive approach; (2) contribute to scientific, technological and social development by promoting the improvement of the competitiveness of companies, professionals and organizations in the water sector; (3) Bring the knowledge of society to the service of society and respond to the social and environmental commitment that guides the organization and is part of its fundamental purposes.

CENTA is a center for wastewater treatment and reuse. In this sense, one of its current lines of research is the development of bioelectrogenic wetlands for the treatment of urban wastewater. This line of research began with its participation in the Aqualectra project (INNPACTO 2010), led by IMDEA Water (Madrid) and continued with other projects financed at regional level (SMARTWETLAND or BioSo4) and at European level (iMETland - H2020). With the 4KET4Reuse project, CENTA intends to provide its expertise in combined electrochemistry - natural treatments to propose an efficient solution for the elimination of CEs in the region of Andalusia and, thus, continue this line of research. Likewise, the participation of CENTA in the 4KET4Reuse proposal, allows obtaining a source of funding to develop its research activity.

Institut de Recherche pour le Développement – IRD

The entity is specialized in the quantitative and qualitative management of water resources. As such, it develops energy-efficient waste-water treatment technologies based on the use of solar energy to provide energy-efficient decentralized treatment systems and thereby conduct water disinfection and disposal of persistent and toxic organic micropollutants.

The entity's interest in participating in the project is, from a technical point of view, the possibility of comparing the efficiency of different technologies for the removal of emerging contaminants. Interregional cooperation also increases the possibilities of disseminating the new technologies developed in the SUDOE space and facilitating the internationalization of the entity. This cooperation will also allow the exchange of new ideas to stimulate innovation in projects and improve communication between different sectors (scientific community, public administration and business).

Faculdade de Ciência e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa – FCTUNL

The CENSE (RESOLUTION lab), belonging to the DCEA, has experience in the electrokinetic/electrodialytic process applied in different matrices for phosphorus recovery and / or remediation of organic and inorganic contaminants. Two team members have about 20 years of experience in electrokinetic remediation and the laboratory is equipped to ensure the technical execution of the project (as well as its analytical follow-up).

The research group coordinated a national project (PTDC / ECM / 111860/2009 Electrokinetic treatment of sewage sludge the development of electrokinetic process-based technologies for phosphorus recovery and removal of emerging organic contaminants for use in Water Treatment Plants (ETAs) and Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTPs).

Participation in 4KET4Reuse will strengthen cooperation in the SUDOE area by leveraging partnerships related to the technology tested and improving the geo-strategic positioning in wastewater treatment with potential for, e.g., agricultural reuse.

Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas - CSIC

IRNAS is an institute of basic and applied research that aims to optimize the use and conservation of natural resources, soil, water and plant. In particular, its scientific activity is based on the following lines of action: (i) agricultural sustainability and diversification, improvement of production quality, with soil being the main key of scientific research; (ii) the impact of the use of agrochemicals on soil and surface water and groundwater; (iii) production of genetically engineered plants resistant to salt stress; (iv) use of organic and inorganic natural and synthetic materials to reduce soil and water contamination. This last line includes the development of filters based on new adsorbent materials for water purification.

The advantage for the entity in participating in the project is the transfer and diffusion of a new patented technology for use in water purification processes.

Associação Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia Almada/Setubal – MADAN PARQUE

Madan Parque is a Science and Technology Park that has the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Lisbon (FCT-UNL) as the main associate. The local innovation ecosystem integrates a set of applied research entities (UNINOVA and FCT-UNL's own research centers), and some of these structures have relevant specific competences to support the activities to be developed within the project. Several companies installed in Madan Parque have products and / or services and / or lines of intervention that fit perfectly into the program of this project. In view of the above, the potential for dissemination of project results is unmistakable, since Madan Parque is composed of 3 other members (NOVA Rectory, Almada Municipality and Seixal Municipality), a local development agency, the local employment center, various local base incubators, etc.

Madan Parque mission is mainly oriented to the following activities:

  1. Dynamize the cooperative relations between universities, technological infrastructures, enterprises and local authorities, with a focus on knowledge enhancement and technology transfer activities;
  2. The dissemination of specialized information at national and international level;
  3. The promotion of research and training activities of interest to businesses and services;
  4. The development of new products and processes, as well as studies on their commercialization;
  5. The promotion of cooperation projects between business and university circles in all countries with which Portugal has diplomatic relations, within the framework of the European Union, as well as with Portuguese-speaking countries;
  6. The promotion of initiatives aiming at the debate on experiments and innovations introduced in the field of scientific and technological research

Nanoelectra - NANOE

The development of electronic hardware specializing in the monitoring and control of microbial electrochemical systems as responsible for the operation of bielectrogenic wetlands.

The advantage for the entity in participating in the project is the opportunity to develop equipment for specific applications in the field of water treatment, a strategic niche for the company.
